From: Matt Howes, National Internet Organizer, ACLU To: ACLU Action Network Members Date: August 19, 2003 The Bush Administration continues to move forward with a new airline profiling system despite significant concerns about its impact on privacy and safety. This computerized profiling system -- known as CAPPS II -- would put the government in the business of conducting background checks on all travelers each time they fly. Not only would this system severely infringe on each individual's privacy, many innocent people would be delayed or banned from travel and have no way of finding out why. The system would furthermore be easily tricked by terrorists using false identification. The Department of Homeland Security has opened a comment period on this new system and it is important that they hear from concerned people like you. Let me just say that I think the whole thing is wrong. It just goes against how our elections are set up. The people spoke last year we elected Gray Davis. For better or worse, thats what we did. First of all, nothing much has changed in those nine months or so that would merit a freakin recall but more importantly, this all sets a dangerous precedent. This one guy (in this case, Issa the Asshat) decides he doesnt like the way the election went so he spends a bunch of money to attempt a recall. Well, say it doesnt workwhats to stop him from doing it again next year? Whats to stop Davis supporters from recalling whoever gets voted in to office in his place? (More importantly, whats to stop us from recalling President Bush?) That all said, I watched a bit of the speech Davis made last nightA) Its about damn time you stood up for yourself, you dork. Only in the last two weeks or so has Davis finally stepped up to the plate in any real way. B) In my opinion, its all pretty much too little too late. Hes scrambling now, trying to right wrongs hes made over the past several years. I totally agree that this whole thing is Republican desperation to gain power in a state where they lost fair and square only ten months ago. Unfortunately they are smart and have chosen to try and take down a man who is an extremely easy target. It might not be right, it may in fact not even be entirely legal; but it may happen anyway. The more important factor in American politics, though, as we all know, is the superficial. Gray Davis is not only a dork, he is an ill-spoken dork. He has no charisma. He is not the least bit funny. He doesnt even show signs of the intelligence, commitment and heart that say Al Gore had factors that made Als superficial stiffness inconsequential to most voting Americans. Now, Arnold may not take any actual positions on actual political issues, but hes got charisma, hes funny and he has a nice body. Gray is in big trouble. Now those of you who have been reading this diary for a while know that I support Davis, to an extent. At any rate, I voted for him. In truth, though, had there been a choice other than Bill Questionable Business Practices Simon running against him, I would have voted otherwise. Davis is far from a great governor. But he is our governor and we should abide by the will of the people. What I want to know is, thoughon the ballot for the recall, we have to vote twice: Once whether or not to recall and then again for the person you want to take office should the recall go through. So if I vote no on the recall because in its essence it is the completely wrong thing to do, can I still vote for a candidate? I mean, I dont want Davis recalled but if he does get recalled, can I vote for Bustamante to take his place (who is neck-and-neck with Arnold in the polls, people, so lets not jump the gun and think our next governor is going to be the Terminator)? If anyone knows, please tell me. ~~~ Word of the Day for Wednesday August 20, 2003 bucolic byoo-KOL-ik, adjective: 1. Relating to or typical of the countryside or its people; rustic. 2.
