"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."
--Theodore Roosevelt, 1918

Hey kids!

Tonight is night! Come one, come all. Personally, I'll be at the meetup in Long Beach, but I'm sure there is one in your area.

~~~
So did ya'll hear Arnold's reaction to all the press regarding his 1977 interview in the illustrious annals of Qui magazine?
Well, he's now saying he was lying at the time and his life was nothing like that. He apparently thought the lurid tales of sex and drugs made for good press at the time.
You know, I'd have much more respect for him if he'd just cop to the fact that it was 30 years ago, it was the seventies, he was a freakin' professional bodybuilder and his actions were really no different than anybody else's in his position at the time. I mean, a nice "I've grown up since then - that was 30 years ago, after all" would be nice, but at least admit what you did.
~~~

Just so's ya know, after the meetup shin dig tonight, I shall be going to see some friends (including Smithereens-Mike) play in a band at this bar I haven't been to in about ten years - The Prospector. Tomorrow evening, (hey myra-lee!), I'm going to Limerick's for a few drinks with my sister, Sondra. Sadly, she doesn't play darts.

Dear MoveOn member,

Since yesterday, 35,000 Californians (and over 110,000 folks nationwide) have signed our "Recall No, Democracy Yes" pledge. The pledge has received national press coverage and is increasing momentum against the recall.

If we can get 100,000 Californians to pledge to vote No by this time next week, we'll demonstrate the strength of opposition to the recall. Help us reach that goal and it will be an amazing start to this five-week campaign.

First: forward this email to friends and family. You'll be helping to defeat an attack on democracy.

Second: sign the pledge yourself by clicking here.

The recall is an attempt to undo a fair election only months after it took place. It is part of a disturbing trend that began with the impeachment of President Clinton. Extremists who cannot win at the ballot box are going to any lengths to undermine the will of the voters.

Our democracy has survived 227 years for one simple reason: when confronted by extremism, Americans have always united in defense of freedom. We've got to defeat the recall to bring an end to this new, anti-democratic extremism. And we've got to defeat it decisively.

The recall was brought to us by a lone congressman who spent $1.7 million to gather the relatively small number of signatures required to initiate a recall. Now, a Hollywood actor is spending millions of his own money in an attempt to buy one of the country's highest offices. This is crazy and it needs to be defeated decisively to prevent more attacks on our democratic system like this one from happening.

Again, please ask your friends and family to sign the pledge. Remember Florida: a few votes can make all the difference in the world. People who sign the pledge will be more likely to vote no on election day. The pledge has already made an impact, but we need to go farther.

Help us reach our goal of 100,000 California signers by next week. Forward this email to all your California friends and family in California. Together, let's turn the tables and make a decisive defeat of the recall a resounding victory for democracy.

Sign the pledge yourself here.

Sincerely,

--Carrie, Eli, Joan, Noah, Peter, Wes, and Zack

"'After Labor Day it gets serious,' says Tony Quinn, co-editor of the California Target Book, a political journal. 'The circus is pretty much over. We're getting down to the real stuff now.'...

Davis, a Democrat, faces the prospect of becoming the first U.S. governor to be recalled since North Dakota ousted Lynn Frazier in 1921. Davis, 60, is alone on the first part of the Oct. 7 ballot, a yes-or-no on whether he should be fired. The second part is a dizzying list of 135 contenders to fill out his term if he fails to win a majority.

Pollsters are uncertain who will turn out to vote. Recent statewide poll results have varied widely. Davis received encouragement last week from a Los Angeles Times poll showing 50% favoring recall and 45% backing him, an uptick from earlier polls.

'I haven't absolutely ruled out the possibility that he could beat this (recall),' says John Feliz, campaign director for state Sen. Tom McClintock, the most conservative Republican running."

Word of the Day for Thursday September 4, 2003

perambulate puh-RAM-byuh-layt,
intransitive verb: To walk about; to roam; to stroll; as, "he perambulated in the park."
transitive verb:
1. To walk through or over.
2. To travel over for the purpose of surveying or inspecting.

Quote of the Day:

His only authority was his own courage. Any officer could have shot him to death. But he feared nothing for himself and committed himself totally. It was as if his courage was enough to protect himself from everything.
-- Tom Lantos, on Raoul Wallenberg

Inspiration of the Day:

He climbed aboard boxcars filled with people and would handout scores of protective passes, then jump from the train and demand that those with Swedish "protection" be allowed off the trains. He built safe houses to keep them away from danger. He would leverage his Swedish diplomat status to alter the course of humanity. In 1944, Raoul Wallenberg saved tens of thousands of Jews in Hungary when Hitler had ordered all 400,000 of them to be sent to concentration camps. Two years later, at the age of 34, he was captured by the Russians and is said to have died of a heart attack. Wallenberg is a man without a grave but maybe that's because he lives on in the hearts of many.
