Driving A Wedge
Rep. Adam Smith (D-09), who has endorsed Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), writes in Roll Call: Dean "seems intent on driving a wedge right into the middle of the Democratic Party. While this may or may not serve his short-term personal goal of winning the Democratic nomination, it is likely to prove fatal to the broader and far more important goal that all Democrats have of defeating President Bush in 2004." Smith goes on to charge that Dean "has become increasingly vitriolic in his attacks on fellow Democrats in recent weeks ... He vilifies any Democrat who supported the Iraq war resolution, any portion of the president's tax cuts or the No Child Left Behind legislation, claiming these Democrats are worthy of nothing but the utmost contempt. ... He calls them cockroaches that will scurry away from the bright light he, our conquering hero, will shine upon them once he ascends to the White House ... Dean seems oblivious to the reality that he will eventually need the support of this particular group of 'thems' that he has chosen to drive a wedge into" (10/28).

Im sorry, but this is a load of crap. Howard Dean attacking the others? That is such a joke. What he has been doing for weeks is defending himself against their attacks. They have been going after him, full force, for weeks because he is one of the frontrunners. Dean has been tame compared to the barbs thrown at him.

And Im also sorry, but hes also right. Any Democrat who supported Bush, especially in regard to the tax cuts and that falsely named No Child Left Behind program, should be ashamed of themselves. I never heard him use the word cockroach, but I would. :)

Did you happen to see any of the debate this past weekend? It seemed like a good one, but I missed about half of it. I think there is another one on CNN on Nov. 4.

Regards,
Karen

OK, so I havent written anything about Tommy Chong being sentenced to spend 5 months in jail (I've also heard 9 months, elsewhere) for selling glass bongs over the internet. You didnt really expect me to remain non-vocal, didja?

Yall realize that selling bongs and pipes isnt even illegal. Weve all seen stores where they sell them (do they still call them Head Shops or am I once again stuck in 1982?). Well, except Tommys mistake was that he sold them over the internet and thusly across state lines (Ooh! The horror!!!! ) which makes his a "Federal Conspiracy" charge.

I dont know about you, but Im really happy to know that in the midst of this supposed War on Terror; at a time when my particular state is laying off Highway Patrol people and prison guards because we have no money to pay them; at a time when our borders are left vulnerable because we are sorely lacking in patrol officers and yet Border Patrol has instituted a hiring freeze; at a time when some school kid can still get on a Southwest Airlines plane with a pack full of box cutters as happened last week; that my tax dollars are being spent keeping an actor in jail for nine friggin months for selling pipes.

To quote the article: "The crackdown was part of a national government drug sweep by the government called 'Operation Pipe Dreams.' Nice Dreams is one of several companies facing the nightmare of illegal drug charges--17 other similar cases are also pending."

By the way...Tommy made $120,000 selling these things???!!! Man, am I in the wrong business...
