Yes, it's another long entry relating to politics and/or the whittling away of our personal freedoms. Hey, it ain't my fault. Shocker: Bush's Female Nominees Are Anti-Choice! This week, anti-choice Senate leaders, led by Majority Leader Frist and his sidekick Sen. Rick Santorum, are forcing votes on three of President Bush's worst nominees: Carolyn Kuhl, Priscilla Owen, and Janice Rogers Brown. It's no coincidence that all three nominees are women - it's actually part of their strategy to put pressure on pro-choice Senators, who have successfully filibustered several of Bush's most extreme nominees. Apparently, President Bush's allies believe that highlighting three anti-choice nominees who happen to be women will make people forget the President's anti-choice record. Send a message today to your Senators to show that you oppose ANY nominee who opposes privacy and a woman's right to choose. Thanks to the action of activists like you, anti-choice Senate leaders recently failed to get enough votes to move forward with a floor vote on William Pryor, who believes that the Constitution does not protect women's reproductive rights. Help us secure another victory by taking action today! Majority Leader Bill Frist is employing new aggressive tactics to push through a few of President Bushs most extreme nominees. Starting Wednesday evening, the Senate will hold a 30-hour "marathon" debate on judicial nominations that will culminate with cloture votes on Kuhl, Owen, and Brown. While NARAL Pro-Choice America and our coalition partners provide coffee and donuts to pro-choice members, you too can get involved. On Thursday, support Senators who have stood strong against these nominees and against intense pressure from anti-choice leaders. Take action: on Thursday, call 1-888-508-2974 or send a personal message today. A few of our activists' messages may be read during the debate. ~~~ Stop the Senate from Passing a Fossilized Energy Bill How many wars are we going to fight over oil before our politicians get a clue? Energy is at the heart of global security-in the broadest and most meaningful sense of the term. Without an intelligent energy policy, we will never have a clean environment, a strong economy, and peace. There's an effort in the Senate to filibuster the Energy Bill, which was crafted behind closed doors without input from Democrats. By promoting oil and coal, as well as nuclear power, the current bill would set us on a path for more dirty air, war, and health problems, like asthma, for years to come. To send a message to your Senator urging him or her to filibuster the Energy Bill, click here. Here are just three, among many, provisions of the Energy Bill: * It opens up the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling; * It gives over $10 billion in tax breaks to big oil companies; * It authorizes the Energy Department to develop a new generation of nuclear reactors. Senators successfully used their filibuster power earlier this year to stop extremists in Congress. The nomination of Migel Estrada to the federal bench was stopped thanks to a Senate filibuster. Shes the one who had filed Sexual Harassment charges against George Dubya. (I've written about the case before and have been frantically trying to find a link to that entry, to no avail.) What killed her? A gunshot wound to the head. Interesting. ~~~ PRESIDENT'S LACK OF EXIT STRATEGY IN IRAQ UNDERMINES CLARITY OF POSITION President Bush has not articulated a clear exit strategy for American forces in Iraq, saying simply that "our forces will be coming home as soon as their work is done." Back in 2000, however, candidate Bush criticized the Clinton administration's military deployments and touted the "Powell doctrine," which he articulated as, "The force must be strong enough so that the mission can be accomplished. And the exit strategy needs to be well-defined." ~~~ Word of the Day for Tuesday November 11, 2003 solicitous suh-LIS-uh-tuhs, adjective: 1. Manifesting or expressing care or concern. 2.
