Convention Thoughts, as relayed between Barbara & I in various emails over the last two days:

the ikss: [On Monday] I only saw Hillary and Bill. I only saw clips of Gore and Carter. Actually, I could have seen Gore's entire speech cuz they repeated it on CSPAN at 11:00, but I fell asleep. No comment on his personality this time - I was just very sleepy.

I thought both Clintons were excellent, but that's no surprise. You know that thing Hillary said about the only reason the 9-11 Commission was even set up was because of New York citizens fighting for it? Apparently, that was NOT on her Party-Approved Speech - she just threw that in there.

Heh-heh.

Barbara: They said that Carter went off his approved text also. They were saying that you can't tell him what to say or not say, he does what he wants. Good for him, huh? He was very critical about the current administration. Everything he said was true but I guess they were just trying to be positive and not critical in an attacking kinda way. It was pretty strongly worded for him. I liked it.

Hey, aren't they gonna let your guy Dennis speak?

the ikss: Yes, I love me some Jimmy. He's been making a few rather-heated speeches lately. I'm very glad, because so many people have such great respect for him.

Well, they do now.

I was also bummed to have missed the speech by that black dude who was in The Nam with Kerry.

And the answer to your question is...NO!!!!!! Dennis is NOT speaking at the convention.

And I am not happy about it. Frankly, I think it sucks and is pretty much a slap in the face. The man does have many delegates out there on the floor, too. But they have to be "safe" at these conventions. In the hope that non-Democrats are also watching, they don't want some wacky little vegan up on the podium talking about such crazy notions as policy based on respect and dignity.

So of course Dennis and his gang are doing alternative things around Boston this week.

Howard Dean is speaking tonight, though...how does that work? Not that I don't want him to speak, but Dennis is still in the freaking race for Pete's sake [or he was until last week].

(Of course, I guess the same thing could be said about Lyndon LaRouche, who is apparently a Democrat now and has been running as one for a year.)

[Today] Barbara: Your guy Dennis is speaking at the DNC today between 4 and 5. I'm sure you can catch it later on cspan. Did you catch Obama and Teresa last night? They killed. I loved her and he is really good too.

the ikss: I saw the speeches last night. I had to stay up late and watch the repeats, though - my walk made me late and I came in for about the last half of Teresa's speech and that was it. I like her, too, but I just know those ass-wipes in the Republican media are going to just tear her apart. Obama was very cool, yes. I'm glad they made him the keynote speaker, so that we can all get a glimpse of him. It kind of felt like when we first saw Bill Clinton speaking at a Convention back in the eighties. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of him in the future.

Did you hear and of Ted Kennedy's speech? It was pretty killer. He didn't hold back much.

. . .thanks for the tip about Dennis! Where did you hear about it? I was just looking at the convention web site yesterday and their schedule did not include him...And yeah, I've been getting to see most of the convention because they repeat it on CSPAN and even parts of it elsewhere, so hopefully I'll get to see him. I may not get to see much of him ever again, you know...*sob*

By the way - I wasn't all that impressed with Howard Dean's speech last night. I thought it was really cool that everyone gave him such an ovation. And he deserved it. And it wasn't a bad speech, per se - it just wasn't all that good, either.

Hey have you had any nectarines lately? I've been eating a lot of them and they are just YUMMY this year! And it doesn't seem to matter where I buy them - up north, down here - they are all scrumdilicious.

(Oops...thats not about the Convention. But still important information, I should think)

Barbara: No, I did not like Howard's speech. I was disappointed cuz I figured he would be good. Teddy was good in what he said yes, he just doesn't have very good delivery anymore. How old is that guy?

I heard about Dennis on cspan last night. They gave the schedule for tonight. Al Sharpton is also speaking tonight.

the ikss: See, they don't have Al Sharpton listed on the website either!

Jeez...

I was actually in the bathroom when Teddy was giving his speech. I had just gotten out of the shower. So I was listening, but not watching. Anyway, so while I noticed some problem with his delivery, it probably wasn't as obvious to me as it was to you.

I just had two Oreo cookies and it is taking every ounce of my willpower not to go back to that cookie jar and grab another couple.

(Again, not convention-related Oreos, but still...I feel I should be congratulated for the enormous amount of will I am demonstrating at this moment. Never mind the two I already ate, mmm-kay?)

the ikss: I don't have those answers. I am very much like a man - I just take what people give me, without asking the appropriate follow-up questions. . .

Funny how little bits of information just slip out of him, so that I never have a full picture until weeks after I thought I did. . .

(OK, those are totally non-convention-related comments. But for some reason I just thought they sounded funny, even taken out of context.

Yes, I am narcissistic. Luckily, Im also charming, so I know youll all forgive me.)

So about the Convention. I am enjoying it immensely. I think its pretty telling howtogether everyone seems to be in their desire to get Dubya out of office, first and above all else.

Of course, the most enjoyable parts of the Convention are Jon Stewarts astute and hilarious coverage of it, and the goofy delegates dancing around to the absolutely cheesiest songs with lyrics altered to allude to John Kerry I could ever have dreamed up.

A side noteas Teddy Kennedy was leaving the podium last night, they played Still the One over the loudspeakersnow, I happen to like Teddy Kennedy, but even I thought that a more appropriate or at least highly amusing song may have been Still Crazy After All These Years.

You know, it occurs to mesay what you want about Iraq, about 9-11 and the Commission, about whether or not Bush stole the last election, about how hes trying to divide this country; hell, take the other side and talk about howwell, whatever it is you people talk about to justify supporting our present administration. The bottom line?

This is a very exciting time to be alive.

Its scary, its dizzying, its often horrifyingbut its also a very important time in history. And when you look at it that way, itswell, its exciting.
